Partnership lets people living in San Francisco area upload photo or video reports for use by ABC7 News
ABC7’s page asking for YouTube uploads
YouTube has teamed up with a San Francisco television station, ABC7 News, to publish video news reports produced by citizens.

This is the first time the world’s largest video-sharing website has struck a partnership deal with a local news provider.
Users can email in their photo or video reports, or upload them direct to a Google map here.
Proposing possible submission ideas, ABC7 News says: “What’s not working in your city? How long are those bathrooms at the park going to remain closed? Why can’t they stop my street from flooding every time it rains? Who’s responsible? Submit video of what’s broken in your community and we’ll try to get it fixed.” Read more…

Neil Berkett says government should crack down on marketing claims if it wants company to invest in high-speed networks
Mark Sweney guardian
The Virgin Media chief executive, Neil Berkett, has attacked rivals as “grossly misleading” in the way they market internet speeds to consumers.

He called on the government to crack down on advertising if it expects the cable company to invest hundreds of millions of pounds in rolling out high-speed broadband across the UK.
Berkett said that Ofcom’s report into the difference between advertised and actual broadband speeds was a “milestone” in “naming and shaming” rivals but more needed to be done to address the issue.
“Yesterday was a good statement from Ofcom but it only goes halfway,” he said. “Where is the incentive in operators like us investing hundreds of millions of pounds in broadband when we can’t say how much better we are? Read more…

Anyone unlucky enough to commute will know that dead tree media still rule the roost, as least on the nation’s public transport. But ebook readers, including the odd iPad, are starting to creep in, along with mobiles, games consoles and even DVD players on long journeys.
There’s a deep-seated resistance to digital versions of a centuries old traditional of printed books, which have rightly enchanted, educated and enlightened readers since movable type. So what will it take for ebooks to become mainstream?

There are dozens of ebook readers on the market, all largely comparable in size and offering from the lesser know Astak, Kobo and Alex readers to the Kindle, Nook and Apple iPad. Amazon’s launch today of a smaller, cheaper Kindle is significant for two reasons: firstly, it pushes arguably the most popular ebook reader towards a more mainstream audience by making it more affordable.
Secondly, it’s a sign of Amazon’s increasingly aggressive strategy in competing with the iPad, which has stolen much of the spotlight in the ebooks debate (even though books are just one function of the iPad) because of its colour touchscreen. The iPad remains a more exclusive product for a wealthier section of the market, with ebook prices to match – but it is also a notebook, and so has an LCD screen that is much harder on the eyes than sympathetic electronic ink. Publicis Groupe’s Maurice Levy: not ‘lapsing into the euphoria that these results might seem to warrant’

Publicis Groupe, the French owner of ad agency networks including Saatchi & Saatchi, has reported a like-for-like revenue increase of 7.1% to €1.38bn (£1.15bn) in the second quarter.
The company, which said that the results confirms the upturn seen in the advertising market, had overall organic growth of 5.3% on revenue of €2.5bn for the first six months of the year. Net income rose 27.5% year on year to €213m.
Publicis’s operation in Europe reported organic revenue growth of 3.1% to €805m and North America rose 6.6% to €1.2bn, with the USA performing solidly with 7.2% growth. Read more…

Many ad agency meetings now resemble the stand-up comedy circuit of the 90s’

It’s hard to stomach but many ad agency meetings now resemble the stand-up comedy circuit of the 90s. The childhood-favourites routine from a thousand flatlining open-mic sets is now transported to the conference rooms of the persuasion professionals. “Remember Wispa bars?” a coke-blitzed voice pipes up. “What was all that about? They were like rubbish Aeros!” Laughter rings round, cogs start whirring, pound signs appear. Just months later, Wispas descend from nowhere like flying ants. The success of Wispa’s revival makes a stark point: if you can half-remember it, you can market it. Here, scenes of despair soundtracked by Nilsson’s Without You turn to celebration as Rob Brydon announces “SodaStream is back!”

Once we found fun things to do with computers sold as serious machines. Now gadgets are marketed as nothing but toys
The Magic Piano iPad application probably won’t come in that handy in the office. Photograph: Paul Sakuma/AP
As a boy I managed, after much persistence, to persuade my parents to buy me a Sinclair Spectrum 48K+ (the one with the black, concave keys). To do this I had to convince them it was not merely a machine on which to play games but an important tool that would teach me computer programming and aid my schoolwork. It did nothing of the sort, of course, making my own name appear repeatedly and inelegantly (10 PRINT “Saptarshi Ray”; 20 GOTO 10) was all I achieved other than spending hours playing the likes of Jet Set Willy and Gunfright. Coca-Cola is considering cutting ties with the agency that created a Facebook campaign that parents accused of targeting children by using references to a notorious pornographic movie.
The soft-drinks giant, which has come in for heavy criticism after running a racy Facebook campaign for the Dr Pepper brand, has told the agency that it must stop all advertising work on Coca-Cola brands until a decision is reached on whether to terminate the relationship.
“We have stopped all our ongoing work with [digital agency] Lean Mean Fighting Machine and are currently reviewing our relationship with the agency,” said a spokeswoman for Coca-Cola GB. Read more…
