Bing it: Microsoft to launch new search engine but doesn’t bank on beating Google

May 29th, 2009

Microsoft has unveiled a new search engine in a bid to lure Web surfers away from Google and other search sites. It is hoped that new site, ‘Bing’, will be more successful than the company’s two most recent incarnations: Live Search and MSN Search.
Microsoft claims the new search engine will offer an improvement in the number of users who actually find answers to their search questions.

The company’s own research suggests that up to 60 per cent of queries are not answered by current search engines, and that 50 per cent of all searches are in fact repeats of previous questions.

The new search engine aims to be better at working out what users are really looking for. A search for the website Facebook, for example, would display just one result linking to the site itself, but give users the option of displaying further results about the site. Read more…

Are comment links just a form of spam?

May 28th, 2009

Should leaving links in the comments pages of blogs be seen as another way of achieving a higher rank for your site?

Using AdWords, firms looking for compensation cases – such as in asbestos mining – could pay £19 a click. Photograph: Getty Images

To be noticed quickly in search engine results pages, achieving a high page ranking, is essential. That keenly sought and often competitive place may come naturally through a website’s importance (as calculated by search engine algorithms) or via sponsored links such as Google AdWords, which charge advertisers when visitors click through to their websites.

There is a third way: leaving links in the comments pages of blogs – so-called “link spam”. And with the recession biting, link spam, which is almost free, suddenly looks a lot cheaper than AdWords to some companies.

For keywords such as “mesothelioma” (a cancer caused by asbestos) using AdWords, law firms looking for potential compensation cases could pay Google up to £19 a clickthrough. So AdWords may be a good way of advertising for new business if the rewards, as for asbestos claims, are high – or you just need more clients. Read more…

Antispyware Exposed?

May 28th, 2009

I hate spyware.
How To Remove PCmightymax
If you give me a few seconds I will tell you why.
But first, let’s start with how I got here, and why I’m writing this…
It must have been about three weeks ago now, I was browsing the web when I got this popup telling me about spyware on my computer.
Now I’m no computer dummy. I’ve been surfing the net since 1993 when the first real browser, Mosaic, was unleashed.

When the neighbor has a computer problem they ask me to fix it.

Even though my friends all consider me a computer expert the one thing I really dread is spyware like spyware.
What is spyware?

spyware is spyware that downloads itself to your computer usually without you knowing it. Some website owners are paid to install spyware on your computer, so just going to that site can means you get infected. Or spyware could have been installed to your pc when you installed another piece of software.

Companies have been selling antispyware software to help solve these problems. But this software has its own set of problems.

The problem with antispyware software is they at best only remove 90% of your spyware problems.

The only way to remove all your spyware is to buy antispyware software to get rid of 60-90% of your spyware and then buy another antispyware software to remove the last of it.

Hopefully together they will remove all the spyware, but unfortunately most of the time they don’t.

So you’re stuck spending a total of $60 for two pieces of software that still haven’t solved your problem.
That’s why I hate antispyware software. Most of them are a rip off. Read more…

‘We are a viral business’ By Jack Schofield The Guardian

May 21st, 2009

JR Smith, who runs AVG in the Czech Republic, is probably not what you’d expect of the head of a security software company: he’s a Seattle-born American and rather than being an antivirus expert, he used to work in the mobile phone industry. In fact, he lived in London, where he co-founded Dot Mobile, a virtual network operator, before moving to Brno two years ago.

Even more surprising, when we sit down in the Goring hotel near Victoria station in London, it’s not to talk about Conficker, the virus du jour. I suggest a bit of scaremongering might stimulate sales. Read more…
