Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer, today launched a legal attack on Apple in the US courts, alleging the iPhone infringes 10 of its patents. The move could cost the Californian technology firm tens of millions of dollars.
The two companies have been locked in long-running negotiations to agree a deal that would see Apple pay a licence fee to use technology Nokia developed, which is fundamental to the way a mobile phone works and is already in the iPhone. Talks failed to reach a settlement and Nokia has filed a complaint against Apple with the Federal District Court in Delaware.
The case, however, is unlikely to come to court until the end of 2011. Apple can continue to develop and ship the iPhone, which has rapidly eaten into Nokia’s share of the lucrative smartphone market since its launch in 2007. Read more…

An Iberian wolf strides over a fence, its eyes intent on a tasty meal in the next field.
This stunning image won the Veolia Environement Wildlife Photographer of the Year, organised by the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine.
This year was a bumper year with 43,135 entries from 94 countries – up 33 per cent on 2008. The best 100 images in the competition will go on show from October 23 at the Natural History Museum in London.
The competition manager, Gemma Webster, said: ‘While the UK and the US remain our major source of entrants, the greatest growth in entries is happening in China and Russia.’
Judge Mark Hardy, who stars in BBC’s Last Chance To See said: ‘These pictures are the best of the best. We’re finding digital cameras are increasing the quality of the shots as the photographers can change elements such as the exposure while they are still in the field.’

It’s the perfect answer for anyone in need of a speedy breakfast - a toaster which can also grill a couple of rashers of bacon.
The device, called the Toast N Grill, has a normal toaster-style slot along the top for two slices of bread.
But it also has a mini-oven compartment underneath, in which the user can grill a slice of bacon and then keep it warm while preparing the toast.
Enlarge Tefal launches all-new Toast N Bacon device to create the perfect bacon butty in minutes
The manufacturers’ claim that the toaster uses 75 per cent less energy than a traditional oven.
Newly launched, the black and metal design can also grill, sausages, mushrooms or perhaps a tomato to complete a fry up - without the frying.
Toast N’ Bacon (sold as Toast n ‘Grill) follows hot on the heels of Toast n’Egg, a toaster that combines with an egg cooker that can either poach an egg or steam one to hard-boiled perfection.

MySpace has unveiled its first raft of new music features since its chief executive, Owen Van Natta, took over the company nearly six months ago and began repositioning the product as content distribution platform.
By Emma Barnett,
MySpace is expanding its music offering
A new video service, MySpace Music Videos, launches today in the US, Austroalis and New Zealand, aggregating fully licensed music video content from the four major labels, as well as several independents.
MySpace could not put a figure on the number of videos being made available through the platform, however, it already has deals in place with the four major record labels and some independents through MySpace Music, its free ad-supported streaming service – which is live in the US and imminently expected to launch in the UK. When this happens, MySpace UK users will also gain access to the video content.
MySpace cuts two-thirds of UK staffThe News Corp-owned company claims that the video service is unique because no other services has the back catalogue from all four major music labels, combined with every music artists’ profile and fully available audio tracks on top of a social network – enabling the sharing of content via social tools.
There are new recommendation tools, a new hub for the videos to sit within on the site, a new video search engine and full music video catalogues available in artist music players. Read more…

Search giant Google is rumoured to be on the verge of releasing its own Android-powered handset, as well as a music streaming service that could compete with Spotify.
Google could launch its own Android-powered “gPhone” after all, along with a music service to rival Spotify and iTunes Photo: Google
Ashok Kumar, an analyst with Northeast Securities, claims to have spoken to Google’s design partners about the plans. “Google is working with a smartphone manufacturer to have a Google-branded phone available this year through retailers, and not through telcos,” he said.
When Google unveiled the Android operating system in 2007, it scotched rumours of a Google “gPhone”, saying that the platform would produce “not just one gPhone, but thousands”. It is unclear what has prompted the supposed shift in Google’s intentions, and the company itself has refused to comment on the speculation.
