British mobile phone users spent £170m last year on video games they could play on their handsets, a survey reveals
The survey revealed that just 700,000 iPhone users played games on the device, but that 85 per cent of these mobile gamers were happy to pay for titles
More than eight million people in Britain use their mobile phones to play games, according to the National Gamers Survey. Around 3.8 million pay for these games, while around 4.2 million play games that are either free to download or already installed on their phone. 
Sony Ericsson users accounted for the highest number of mobile gamers, with 2.3m saying they used their handset to play games. Nokia and Samsung handsets also proved popular gaming platforms, with 1.8m Nokia users and 1.5m Samsung owners playing games on their devices.
Television on mobile phones boosted by success of iPlayerBy contrast, just 700,000 Apple iPhone users questioned said they used their device for playing games, but 85 per cent of those that did regularly paid to download titles to their phone. Just 38 per cent of Nokia and Sony Ericsson users paid for their games, compared to 51 per cent of Samsung owners, and 41 per cent of LG users. Read more…

A new integrated FM and digital station guide to be built into next generation radios will be proposed today to the House of Lords Select Committee at a meeting focussed on TV and radio digital switchover.

The innovation will see the UK radio industry, both the BBC and commercial stations, work together with set manufacturers such as Sony and Roberts, to create the electronic programme guide that will enable listeners to select stations by name – whether they are on FM or digital, and tune easily between the two.
At present, people who own digital radios have to navigate between the digital and analogue spectrums by pushing a button. However, an integrated list will enable future radios to display all stations both digital and analogue on the same list, allowing listeners to choose by name and tune with more ease from station to station – regardless of whether the service is on digital or FM.

Seatwave, Europe’s largest ticket-trading website, said a “huge jump” in its sales will push the venture-capital backed business into profitability this year, far earlier than expected.
Joe Cohen, chief executive, said sales of tickets for music and comedy events “soared” as more people turn to the so-called “secondary ticket market” to secure entry to see live events.
“Consumers are realising that nothing really sells out any more, they can still get tickets [from online ticket exchanges like Seatwave],” he said.
Video game sales soar as cash-strapped Britons stay homeMr Cohen said the rise in sales, from which Seatwave takes a 25pc cut, will push the group into profit this year.
“We always thought it would take years,” he said. “But as we approach our third anniversary next month, we expect to turn into profit soon.”
He said ticket sales jumped 87pc compared to 2008 as demand for comedy gigs, rock concerts and tickets to last summer’s cricket World Cup and the Ashes soared. Read more…

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the world wide web, has unveiled his latest project for the government, data.gov.uk, which will provide public access to official data.
The new website will enable the public to view official information such as traffic statistics and crime figures and report publems such as pot holes.
Ten applications have also been created for the site including PlanningAlerts, which searches local authority planning websites and e-mails subscribers details of any applications in their area.

A US computer expert says he has found the ‘digital fingerprints’ of Chinese authors on the tools used to launch recent attacks against Google

Joe Stewart, a security specialist with SecureWorks in the US, told the New York Times that he had analysed the software used to attack Google, and found that the main program used by the hackers contained a module based on an algorithm that appeared in a Chinese technical document that has been published exclusively on Chinese-language websites.
Google last week announced that the accounts of human rights activists and political dissidents had been hacked, and that it believed the attacks had originated from China. However, details about the precise nature of the attacks were not revealed, although security experts broadly agreed that Google was probably correct in its suspicions.
Google China hacks ‘a possible inside job’ It is thought that a Trojan virus, known as Hydraq, was responsible for opening a “back door” in to compromised computers, which could then be used by hackers to access and take control of a machine without the owner’s permission or knowledge.
Stewart uses a method known as a “reverse engineering” to unravel malicious software, viruses and Trojans to identify how and where they originated. He looks for patterns in the code, and for unusual algorithms used by hackers to error-check transmitted data. Read more…

A mini-drone that can be piloted using an iPhone promises to revolutionise the video game industry after it was unveiled last week.
The flying saucer-like AR.Drone - AR stands for augmented reality - caused a sensation when it received its public debut at a consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.
It has been developed by a French firm which plans to capitalise on its capabilities by literally bringing computer games to the streets.

Its creators gave a demonstration near their company’s offices on the Canal Saint-Martin in Paris, where the ‘quadricopter’ perplexed and impressed passers-by on a cold winter afternoon.
One of the ten engineers who has spent four years developing the drone tapped a button on his iPhone to lift it off the ground and make it hover near the dark waters of the canal.
Then he tilted the phone forward or sideways to make it manoeuvre around nearby trees and park benches.

Google has delayed the launch of its new mobile phone in China amid a diplomatic row with Beijing over censorship laws.
The decision is a result of Google’s threat to pull out of China if restrictions are not lifted, said a person briefed on the move.
The company has decided it would ‘not be a good experience’ for consumers to receive a phone right now with its applications, said the person, who spoke anonymously.
Marsha Wang, a spokeswoman for Google Inc., however, only said today’s planned ceremony with local carrier China Unicom Ltd. was postponed.
She did not give a reason or say when the launch might be rescheduled.
China has the world’s most-populous mobile phone market, with more than 700 million accounts and increasingly prosperous customers who readily pay for the latest technology and services.
The decision came today as Beijing demanded that Google obey China’s laws and traditions.
The statement - the first time officials have acknowledged the row with Google - is an indication officials won’t budge after the search giant threatened to pull out of the country if internet restrictions aren’t relaxed.

Millions of viewers who use Freeview to watch digital TV have been warned their equipment won’t work with a raft of new high definition channels.
Even those who have recently bought an HD-ready television with a built-in Freeview decoder face paying at least £170 to upgrade.
